Ensemble message: I like to read style blogs that focus on professional style, but I also read many that have a more casual vibe. Off of Broadway is one of those - Amanda has a great sense of style and wears mostly thrifted items. Which makes sense, since she runs her own thrift store :) As soon as she posted this outfit, I knew I could remake it from my own closet. Amanda lives in a warmer climate, so she can get away with wearing the lightweight jacket on mild winter days, but I used my jacket as another inside layer. This is perhaps a little more casual than a normal Friday at the office, but some weeks call for slouchy layers and flats. Thanks for the inspiration, Amanda!

Ensemble message: When I received this cardigan for Christmas, I immediately wanted to pair it with all things olive! I started with my favorite olive pants, so I decided to wear it with my favorite olive dress next. I really like how the raspberry color brightens up an otherwise neutral outfit. Also, I’m loving the preppy nature of the overall look (belt, boots), but that the color of the cardigan gives it a twist!

My only regret? Not pinning the neckline better :(

Don't Cut Off Your Co-Workers

If you know me in the workplace, you know that I tend to come across as reserved, polite, and PC. This may even come through in my blog posts as well. Some might even label me as boring, unless I open up and we start talking about my hobbies or vacations. But even then, my personality comes across as… vanilla. It’s really no surprise that I’m like this – besides being an introvert, my dad is the epitome of politeness, and I was raised to be concerned about what others thought (early personal branding??) I have thrown some of that concern aside with my taste in music and clothes, neither of which can be considered to be mainstream. But overall, you can be sure that I will not give anyone the impression that I’m anything but a nice person and overall good citizen. I've even gone to the extreme of running to the other side of a grocery store when I saw a colleague on a Sunday morning… because I was hurting bad from a large number of cocktails the evening before.

However, I do have a different side that I don’t really let shine outside my circle of friends and family. It’s kind of weird, being so straight-and-narrow at work and then letting loose at night and on the weekends. Don’t misunderstand – the reserved, PC side of me is authentic. I just do a better job of balancing the niceness with the sarcastic jokes when with friends.

Since I started supporting the sales team, I’ve realized it’s important for the team to get to know the real me – not because they care (some might), but because they want to know that I’m human, that I make mistakes like them, and overall so they can trust me. So, I’m trying to be more comfortable being my authentic self while at work. I’m more open about my personal plans on weekends, I’m not shy about ordering an adult beverage while at a work dinner, I’m letting my snarky side make appearances as appropriate, and I’ve let a few curses slip here and there (fact: I actually have a really bad potty mouth!)

But I am sure to draw the line somewhere – which is what originally inspired this post. I often haul ass out of the parking lot at the end of the day, music blasting. I have to keep reminding myself to tone down my typical aggressive NJ driving near the office, because it would be pretty embarrassing if I got caught cutting off a co-worker!

I'm still a bit tired and getting used to being in cold weather again ;) I thought I would have had more time for personal stuff (ie. blog) but I was kept busy all week. But now I'm back, and happy to start the week with this outfit - it's one of my faves! The oversized sweater layered on top of a dress is such an easy and fun look... I have to restrain myself from creating the same look with the variety of other dresses in my closet ;) On this particular day, I had a half day at work and had plans to meet up with some friends... so easy and fun were right on target.

Ensemble message: So after recovering from a long busy period at the Day Job and prepping for the holidays, I was itching to let the creative juices flow and make something with my hands. The work I do is so intangible, that sometimes I crave projects where I can physically see my results. Luckily, I had recently found this link through Caitlin's blog and knew it was something that I could make... I mean, it's a cut-only, no sewing necessary project - perfect! I found this thick, gorgeous flannel on sale at Joann Fabrics... I originally wanted to go with something more wintery (brick red, forest green, etc.), but the orange was so different and pretty, I just couldn't resist going with autumn colors!

I ended up using Stitch Witchery to clean up the raw edges... but that just employs an iron, a piece of machinery that I can operate without too much trouble ;) Did anyone else see this article?? I'd love to see photos of your capes!!

Ensemble message: Looking for something comfy for work, so I grabbed this Fossil dress that I got as a gift a couple years ago. It's a grey sweatshirt material, so it's nice as is, but can be difficult to layer in cold weather. This time I went for a simple striped shirt, and mixed things up with a printed scarf. This is probably my favorite way of wearing this dress, and I would totally wear a similar ensemble on the weekends - but maybe with bolder colors and prints!

Ensemble message: So in case you were wondering, this is what I, as an HR person, chooses to wear as an interviewer. Less formal than being the interviewee, but I still like to wear traditional office pieces (pencil skirt, trousers, cardigan, blazer, etc.) to show respect to the candidates. Now, I wouldn't suggest going overboard as an interviewer... afterwards, you want to properly reflect your company and team's culture. So, in some cases, jeans might be appropriate! As always, remember that the clothes you wear to work are a reflection of you as a professional and also your company.

Ensemble message: On December 1st, I was counting down the hours of when my super, crazy, insane schedule would go back to normal. Between long meetings on team performance for the year and multiple recruiting events, I just wanted to be done. This was the day before that last recruiting event, and while I was attending to last minute details during the day, I had to be ready to wine and dine the candidates that evening. I personally love the dinners because you can get to know the candidate on such a personal level, which in turn can help them score a position down the road. So I went with an outfit that was a little younger but still professional, comfortable yet polished.

Ensemble message: This outfit is from the day before Thanksgiving... and man was I burnt out from work (and still have several more weeks of craziness ahead of me - yikes). Yes, yes, I'm still behind on photos but hey, what a great way to drag out the holiday season just a little more! Better than keeping your Christmas lights up AND lighting them til the spring ;) This outfit incorporated orange and purple/maroon, a color combo that I recently wore in another post. One of my goals for this fall and winter was to incorporate more colors into my outfits, and using jewels tones has made this easy to do.

November and December have been nuts for me at the Day Job, so comfort and easy-to-style outfits were key for me every day. Between my hectic schedule and the weather cooling down, I'm really loving the more utilitarian looks that incorporate finer pieces (silk shirts, statement necklaces, heels). Also, I was only in my house for a couple weeks and was still trying to figure out the best place for photos. I now know that outside with my back to the house is best, and that I can get halfway decent indoor shots in my dining room. For this post, you'll have to deal with these dark results ;)

And I don't know about you, but anything that glitters and shines always brightens my day! On this particular day, I was up to my eyeballs with year-end work... but every time I noticed my skirt, I couldn't help but smile :)

Ensemble message: So since I'm behind in posting outfits, I'm not really sure what was going on that day. From my work calendar, it doesn't look like anything special was happening. So I'll tell you more about how I put this ensemble together (somehow, I remember that much better ;) This sweater is a new favorite, and it looks great with skinny pants. I wasn't sure how to wear it with a skirt, but since the sweater is longer and a thicker knit, I soon realized that the skirt should be more form fitting. This pencil skirt was a great match! And I like how the combo has almost a dress effect.

What do you guys think? What else should I wear this sweater with??

Ensemble message: Ok, so I'm officially a month behind on outfit photos ;) But, I think things have slowed down a little at the Day Job to bring you all up to speed! And I have some good ensembles that are way better than what my burnt-out brain is coming up with lately. But onto this one... this is the 1st photo shoot in our new house! Hence an empty room with icky lighting. You'll see some progression over the next several posts. This outfit was a sort of a JCrew inspiration... I've noticed a lot of their recent looks have neutrals, at least one bright piece, and some sort of pattern.

What do you think? Could I have done anything differently??

(I think this last point is clear by the lines in my skirt - kinda embarrassing!) My schedule has been jam packed since we moved, and more than ever, I am truly looking forward to the holidays... blissful time off spent with my loved ones. And maybe some paint brushes too ;)

Ensemble message: This month's EBEW is all about colored tights, and luckily I just happen to wear colored tights often once the temperature drops. Though these photos are from a couple weeks ago, I am actually wearing colored tights again today. I love the fuschia and purple together with a couple neutral pieces to balance out all the color. I find that this tan cardi easily tones down any outfit, and is quickly a go-to piece when I'm craving color in the office.

For some, colored tights can be overwhelming, especially in a professional setting. I try to stick with muted, darker colors so that you don't feel like your legs could glow in the dark. My favorites are purple, maroon, navy, sage, and cerulean. I'd like to add a forest green in there and a rust red as well!

(I told you yesterday that I was tempted to buy the whole store... but these 2 pieces were it ;) As soon as I saw this dress, I knew that I could wear it alone on the weekends in warm weather, or pair it with a blazer. A plain, black blazer would make the print a bit more serious, but this striped jersey blazer is just so much fun! The tough black boots with black over-the-knee socks also help bring the overall outfit down-to-earth. A fun look for an otherwise boring day at the office :)

Ensemble message: Yesterday I posted the outfit that I wore to dinner the evening before an extended team meeting. This is what I wore to the actual meeting, where I had 45 minutes to present an HR update. Normally I don't stress out about a quick update, but this was the first time I was meeting this team! I knew that most people would be casual during this meeting, but I didn't want to be in jeans while presenting to this group for the first time ever. I feel that this outfit was a good balance, and my presentation went really well!

Ensemble message: I wore this outfit last week for one of two busy days. On this particular day, I had to be in the office for most of the day (with several meetings) and then drive to Philadelphia for a team dinner. One of the client groups I support were having a 2 day extended team meeting, and they asked me to join them for dinner and then to provide an HR update the next day. This day was a little tough to plan for because I had several factors to consider: I was meeting this team for the first time, I'd be in the car for 2+ hours and going straight to dinner (no wrinkles allowed!), and it was an oddly warm day for late September. I think this outfit worked out well - the dress was fun but the jacket added a little formality, and the cotton didn't wrinkle a bit!

Ensemble message: Over the summer, as busy as I've been, I have noticed that crop tops have made a comeback. I personally think this is unfortunate for a couple reasons... first, crop tops on their own will never, ever be office appropriate. Second, my stomach has never been toned enough to show off ;) But I do like the look of a long tank layered under a crop top, I think it really lengthens the body! This sweater is not technically cropped, but with the long top underneath, it gives the illusion of being shorter.

Ensemble message: I dressed with intention on this particular day... this was the day that I helped launch a generational business network at the Day Job, which included co-hosting a kick-off meeting with cupcakes (come on, everyone knows the 1st rule of meetings - lure them in with food ;) Since I had to present on a topic that is equal parts professional and fun, I took one of my most professional dresses and added a few fun elements: vest, black beads, and booties.

To add to the professionalism, I wore Hanes Silk Reflections stockings, which I was gifted to review. If you've been a long-time reader, you know that I love my tights in the winter. However, some days call for something a bit more sheer. Here's my only problem... I tend to put runs in stockings within the first hour or two of wearing them. Not cool if you have a big meeting later that day. But Hanes Silk Reflections lasted me up to my network launch, until the end of the (work) day, and through dinner with friends afterwards! Also, even though the toe was not reinforced, my toes did not tear through either - another annoyance that I have with all hosiery (yes, somehow I manage to tear the toes even in super thick tights!) Overall, I was very pleased with the product. My only warning is that the size seemed to run a bit small... even though I was well within the height & weight range, I still felt as if they pinched at the waist. But, this won't stop me from wearing them over and over again!

Life as I Know It

Me & D, just hanging

Wow you guys, I can't believe Summer 2011 is over already! Things on this end have been a bit less stressful since I last checked in... I'm settling into my new role, and I think finally, finally I'm back to normal working hours (FINALLY!) Which means I am trying to find more balance in my life... The Husband and I have taken a couple weekend trips and I'm working out more regularly. I've also cut out coffee and replaced it with green tea (too many coffee/stress tummy aches) and working on eating better. Not really easy when you're a nomad as we eat dinner out way, way more than we used to. But I'm trying!

But the best part... I think it's finally safe to announce that we got a house!!! After many months of searching, and a couple more months of bringing this deal to fruition, we're due to close near the end of October :) I cannot even begin to emphasize how stressful buying a house is... once you find THE ONE, then there's the mortgage to deal with, along with the home inspection.... oh, and not to mention the scare of Hurricane Irene putting a tree through the roof or water in the basement or both (The House was fine). But mostly the mortgage process. It's like bearing your financial soul for all to see... ick. Well, we finally got our mortgage commitment tonight, and things seem to be moving along!

I've also tried to take some time and put all this nonsense in perspective, and really I cannot complain. There could be worst things than a lot of stress in your life. And throughout it all, I know that my readers have been there for me. Thank you for all your comments - I will reply back to them soon! Ensemble message: I've been saving this outfit all week for today... because today was the day that I met a new client group! After the Big Project at the Day Job, my team swapped client groups. I am really excited because I know I'll learn a lot from this group. But I was also nervous because rumor has it that the VP of the team can be tough to work for. So, I wanted to dress professionally (hence the button-down and pencil skirt) while also letting my personality shine through (with the watercolor print and colors).

I started the meeting by talking about me as a person outside of the Day Job, and then led to my professional background. I finished off with some topics/projects that I want to focus on and a request for them to invite me to their team meetings. And I think I was a success! I feel like I made a connection with this new group - one director came up to me afterwards to talk about music. And, the VP even joked about when he has "challenges"... read: when he's not happy ;) At least he has a sense of humor!

Ensemble message: There are some articles of clothing that every blogger seems to acquire. This is one of them. The dress I'm wearing today is yet another. Blogging can be a funny thing because you want your style to be unique, but most bloggers I know look to one another for inspiration. So, there are bound to be overlaps! I held off from buying this dress for a couple reasons... first, I worried about looking like other bloggers. Second, I never found it on sale. Ensemble message: So yeahhh... this is me, currently. Last week got a little crazy (what else is new?) so I didn't get to post much or even take photos to come back to this week. Then, we moved to Part 2 of Nomadic Living on Saturday, right before Hurricane Irene hit the northeast. The Husband and I were able to squeeze in the move plus a movie and dinner out before the worst of the storm hit us, but essentially I've been in comfy clothes since I got home from work on Friday night. On top of that, Irene knocked out the power at the Day Job for 2 days straight, so I've been working from home. Oh, and did I mention that I haven't been bothered with make-up either? Below is a rare make-up-less pic, but I wanted a close-up of my scarf (aka undried hair tamer):

Speaking of home, Part 2 of Nomadic Living is a Residence Inn. Not too shabby! Poor Donna is a bit confused... in the past 2 months, she's gone from a condo as a single dog, to a full house with 2 playmates, and now a studio as the lone dog once again. She's a bit dramatic about it, but then again, I don't think she's complaining about the multiple pillows on the bed:

Ensemble message: Another from the memory card! I wore this almost 2 months ago... assuming it was a typical day in the office. Clearly it wasn't too hot yet since I ~~stole~~ borrowed this shirt from The Hubby. I thought the grey in the shirt would look too monotone with the grey skirt, but the green vest breaks everything up nicely.

Ensemble message: This outfit was styled especially for this week's Everybody Everywear challenge - mixed prints! Mixing prints is not a stretch for me, I've done it before (see below). But it was a challenge to find a new mix since my wardrobe is a bit limited at the moment. Though it's subtle, the stripes on the jacket do count as a print! I personally think that stripes and floral are the easiest prints to mix (for those of you who might be a bit shy when it comes to mixing prints).

Ensemble message: Well, I must admit... I just found these photos, along with 2 other outfits, on my memory card last week. I *think* they are from the week before I went on vacation. I don't believe there was any particular reason I wore this, but I had this outfit in my head for awhile. This is my answer to color blocking for the office: one half is brightly colored but toned down by a darker neutral. This would also work with a tan skirt or pants too.

Ensemble message: Remember when I went on a big thrifting spree in March? I featured a few items soon after, and this dress was one of them. (Yesterday's skirt was another find that I hadn't featured yet.) I love this dress, but honestly, I feel like it's a tad too short for the office. Last time I wore it as is, I felt self conscious all day... and if you don't feel good, your performance is sure to be impacted! So this time around, I layered the dress over a white skirt for a longer silhouette.

Hey guys, remember me? My name is Nicole and I used run Employed Panache on a regular basis. If you’re a regular reader, you've probably noticed that my posts have been lacking lately… as in I have not posted anything in a full month. And for a couple months prior, posts were spotty at best. You might be asking yourself what happened… well guys, real life happened, and it happened hard and unexpectedly.

I have been avoiding a post like this because I work hard to stick to the Employed Panache brand of office appropriate work wear with a smattering of posts on professional topics. I felt that writing about anything outside of the 9-5 would not be appropriate. I also thought that it would be a short blip, and that I’d be up and blogging again quickly. Well, that was clearly not the case… and then I read several “transparency and credibility” posts by Ashley of Consciously Corporate. Ashley put herself out there for all of the internet to read, knowing that her friends, family, and maybe co-workers will be reading her thoughts. The first post must have gone over well, because Ashley wrote at least 2-3 more transparent posts afterwards!

While what I am about to discuss/vent may not be directly related to outfits to wear to work, HR, careers, or any other office or professional matters, this is all about work-life balance and knowing what your healthy limits are. So here it goes… in-your-face real life that I’ve been dealing with over the past 4 or so months:

Reality Check #1
In April, I moved into a different role at The Day Job. This was a very good thing… it wasn’t a promotion, but I needed a change. New projects, new characters, new challenges. As they say, beware what you wish for… when I started the role, my new team was in the middle of transitioning a newly acquired company into the function while at the same time reorganizing the current structure. Oh, and interns had to be recruited and on-boarded within the following 2 months – tasks that were 100% my responsibility. Let’s just say that ratio of work-life balance quickly shifted so that work was winning out most days. During this time, I was still kinda blogging… taking pictures in the morning was still an easy part of my routine, but my free time in the evening was less. And whatever time outside of The Day Job I did have went right to…….

Reality Check #2
House hunting! The Husband and I decided it was the right time to make a move into a house, so we began extensive research when we got home from work. On top of that, a couple nights a week plus a full weekend day went towards looking at houses. Sounds time consuming but fun, right? Well, let’s just say that the fun wore out real quick. Because it’s a “buyer’s market,” we have a lot of competition and in 4 months we’ve lost 4 deals. Also, I never expected house hunting to be so damn emotional. But we are looking for our forever home, the place where we’ll raise kids one day… so yes, tears were shed on multiple occasions. Despite this, we are still looking and going strong. If anything, we’re becoming very efficient at knowing immediately whether a house will work for us. And in the end, I am a bit tougher as a result.

Reality Check #3
I've realized that I have to stick by the grown-up decisions I make. I won’t go into a ton of details, but essentially The Hubby and I subletted our condo before finding a house. Don’t ask, it does make sense (to some degree) given our situation and who we have as a tenant. But this all adds up to moving our stuff into storage and living with friends and family for several months on top of everything else. This reality, among all of them, is probably what has gotten me closest to a major meltdown.

Reality Check #4
Throughout all this, I quickly learned that my energy is not unlimited. Gone are the days I can abuse my body with junk food, tons of coffee, little sleep, and no exercise. I don’t know if my body is just used to me taking better care of it (vs. the college years) or if I’m *gasp!* getting older. Either way, I am often tired and unmotivated once I get home. And instead of pushing myself to exhaustion and the brink of my sanity, I give in when I need to take a run, watch tv, read a book, see friends, hike with my dog, etc. instead of blogging.

Soo this is my life currently. I hope this post didn’t come off as me whining, because I recognize that I have a TON to be grateful for! But dear readers, you deserve to know what’s going on. I’m slightly more settled now that I’m out of my condo and staying in one place for the next month or so, so I do hope to blog a bit during this time! Please hang in there with me for the time being :)

PS: I honestly wasn’t sure if anyone would notice my absence. Well, you did notice, thank you for the kind notes! Its awesome readers like YOU that motivate me to get back on the horse (as they say :)

This outfit proved to be just right: the loose fitting blouse was cool but also covered the top half of my arms, and the skirt allowed for airflow but came to my knees. I tossed on a fun, colorful necklace and was ready to go!

Ensemble message: This is the face of pure, unadulterated RELIEF! When I started my new role at the Day Job back in April, I was tossed into several projects midstream. One project was to organize and facilitate the summer intern orientation. These photos were taken the day after orientation ended. I believe the overall experience was a success, as measured by the number of hugs I received as the interns departed for their final office locations ;) I have to say, helping out with an internship program is one of those areas of HR that takes so much time and energy, but it seriously might be the most rewarding. I also get to benefit from the program by having an HR intern of my own... so I will try to write a post sometime this summer about hiring and managing an intern!

Oh yeah, not to ignore the obvious, but I'm also back... for the long haul I hope! Did you miss me these past couple weeks? While I didn't have time to post, I did take multiple outfits shots that I can't wait to share with you!

Ensemble message: Just another manic Monday! More rain to start off my week, which for me meant wearing pants. I truly hope this is the last of the yellow-ish, blurry, icky indoor pics for a long, long time. But back to my outfit... I am so happy that I bought this sweater from Forever 21 as it's proved to be very versatile! It layers well and is a great neutral on its own. And given the up and down weather this past month, this sweater has really come in handy.

So who's ready for the holiday weekend?! I am, obviously, since I'm posting early! It's the first Friday of summer hours at the Day Job, which means if I work at least 45 extra minutes Monday through Thursday, I can take a half day on Friday. Ensemble message: I wore this outfit just because. Because I love this new striped blazer, and was psyched to see how well it pairs with this ancient skirt. Because the sun is finally out here in NJ. Because I knew I had a boat-load of work waiting for me at the Day Job and I wanted to feel good while chained to my desk.

This blazer is quickly becoming my new favorite article of clothing... the material is almost sweatshirt-like, so it's comfy and could work with a casual outfit. But the crisp black and white stripes and structured fit makes it perfect for work as well. Have you bought anything recently that you keep wearing over and over?

Ensemble message: I wore this outfit during the week-long span of cool temperatures and tons of rain. I had virtually no meetings at work and then a concert in NYC that night, so I went the comfy route and wore leggings. I honestly can't remember the last time I wore leggings to work, which is funny because during Winter 2010, that's pretty much all I wore (good thing I wasn't blogging then, haha!) But then I saw this post by Elaine of Clothed Much and remembered that leggings can be sleek and stylish. Next time I'll go for all out copy-cat with a blazer, but I loved the more casual take with multiple layers.

Carissa Rose - Katerina Dress

Ensemble message: As you know (because I've whined about it enough here), my work-life balance as of late has been, well, unbalanced. Some days are ok, and even if I don't get to blog, I finish off enough on my never ending to do list to feel accomplished. But some days or weeks are much worse... and last week was one of those. However, my day was instantaneously brightened on Tuesday when I got home and found a package from Carissa Rose on my doorstep! In it was a tunic (saved for another post) and this dress. Despite the much cooler temperatures and the need for tights, I was so happy with this dress!

The material, collar, and cuffs remind me of a typical shirt dress, but this dress is so much better. Instead of buttons, the eye-hook closures on the bust lay flat no matter how much moving around you do throughout the day. The length is just right so sitting, standing, or anything in between, you know you're staying modest ;) But I think the very best part is the double-wrap built-in belt that nips you in at the most flattering part of your waist! I can most certainly see myself wearing this dress not only on a typical work day, but to an interview, big presentation, work dinner, bridal/baby shower, fancy brunch, or nice dinner out. In fact, I have a charity dinner to attend in early June right after work - and you can bet that this is what I'll be wearing :)

Ensemble message: It's official... I'm obsessed. I love my silk pants so much, both pairs! They feel like pj's but are cool enough in heat and humidity (well, at least while the warmth lasted here in NJ). I actually bought this pair last year after throwing any logic out the window, and until now, only wore them on the weekend. After these pants survived a night out in Mexico back in February (dinner, drinks, dancing, the whole shebang), I decided that they were tough enough to wear on more casual work days. Now if only they can survive the days that I eat salad with oil and vinegar dressing....!!

By the way, my bracelet is a DIY that I whipped up in one night while forcing myself to have some relaxation time. I really love the results and wear this bracelet pretty frequently! It was pretty easy to make - then again, I made lanyards with the plastic string all the time as a kid. If you're interested, use Love Maegan's instructions... the only difference is that I added a Buddha charm :)

I wore skirts and dresses all winter, and now that the weather is warming, I turn to pants. Maybe it's because I've acquired a couple pairs of silk trousers on the cheap, including these chocolate brown ones from Anthropologie. Add a delicate camisole and either a cardi or jacket... and you have what I think will be my summer uniform. At least, I say that until the temps hit 85+ degrees ;)

Ensemble message: Hmmmm... if I'm not sure what date I took these pics, then surely I don't remember why I wore what I did ;) Looking back at my calendar from last week, I had no major meetings scheduled. So this was probably a quick, spring-like outfit fit for an office workhorse. Oh, also I'm sure I planned the outfit around my necklace, which I made myself last week! This was the same necklace that an Anthropologie cashier complimented me on, along with a vintage purse I won from Amanda :)

By the way, can you tell it was BRIGHT that day?! Sorry for the washed out pics, poor shadows, and squinty eyes (these were actually my best pics, lol!) Without fully bloomed trees yet, it was hard to find a spot without direct sunlight.

Evolution of the Cubicle: Part 2

So as you may remember from this post, I mentioned that I'm changing office scenery three times this year at the Day Job. Yes, three!!! As you can see, my office environment last year was kind of old school and dark. In fact, it was the oldest part of the building and had not been renovated since the early 90's. Now they are ripping up that space to provide us with something new and pretty cutting edge! But that will be Part 3 of this series... today, I bring you Part 2: The Transition Space.

The contents in my space have not changed much at all. But, the cube walls are considerably lower and I share a larger area with a colleague. (Good thing I like her ;) Lower walls equals more light, which I love! I definitely have more energy in a well lit room. And I can just stand up and speak with my surrounding colleagues. But lower walls also means more noise... luckily, I can tune people out pretty well and we try to be considerate of one another. Ensemble message: I am tired. Exhausted. Physically & mentally. It's so bad... that I haven't been pre-planning my outfits!!! Ok, dork alert :) But it's true! Picking outfits in advance helps me move so quickly in the morning. This was outfit #2... well, #3 or #4 if you count the versions with the blouse tucked in partway and completely untucked. But despite running a little late, I really liked the results. I think 10 months (!!!) of blogging has really helped me define my style, or at least narrow it down. And I can make quicker decisions when necessary, like this morning... but I do really love spending time in my closet pulling together multiple outfits ;)

What do you do to get out the door on time?? (I think I need more help :)

Ensemble message: Despite the title, I am not wear navy or red, nor do I have a sailor inspired dress or pants on. But whenever I wear stripes, I feel nautical! Even if the stripes are an ombre grey (not sure if you can see them going from light to dark). And I feel like green is an unexpected complimentary nautical color... am I wrong? Probably, but whatever, it worked for me :)

I had way too much fun taking these photos! It was last Friday and it was fun to take some time before work to figure out how to deal with the super bright sun. Plus the cove of forsythia bushes made for a fun photo shoot location. This last photo is the best... I don't typically photograph myself in my jackets, but after I noticed that the print was almost like forsythia camouflage, I couldn't resist ;)

Ensemble message: I've been putting my nose to the good ol' grindstone this week, so I've needed outfits to figure themselves out. Over the weekend this grey top and my purple drapey sweater decided to be friends, and I figured why not utilize the layers on the coldest day of the week. What do you wear when you don't have a lot of time to plan your outfits??

I have to say, the more I wear my We Love Colors tights, the happier I am with them! Since northern NJ hasn't gotten it's big spring warm up yet, I'm wearing tights much longer into the season than I anticipated. Good thing my We Love Colors tights can take a beating - commuting, running around the office, dog claws during happy evening greetings, weekend wear... I've worn them everywhere, especially these black tights, a staple in my wardrobe. While you may not be looking for tights at this point of the year, lucky for all of us, We Love Colors doesn't just do tights. They have a whole selection of socks and active wear - perfect for all your time outdoors this spring and summer!

Ensemble message: I didn't plan on it, but my color scheme matches my mood today. I think I've mentioned this before, but The Hubby and I have been house hunting recently, and on Saturday we saw The House. It was perfect. We made an offer, got as close to being in a bidding war as I ever want to get, and then found out this morning that we didn't get the house :(

Some tears, lots of pouting, a great support group of friends and family, and 45 minutes on the treadmill later, I'm ready to move on. So here we are, today's outfit being an unfortunate reflection of today's events. Weird how these things happen, right??

Ensemble message: Lately, by the time I hit Friday, I am ready to wear only simple and comfortable clothing. Jeans (whatever was clean) and flats were a must. To feel at least like I tried, I grabbed this Anthro shirt. I truly like this shirt, but I have to admit that I'm often overwhelmed by the sheer volume of fabric. I haven't tried tucking it into anything yet.... that's for a non-Friday :)

Ensemble message: Today's weather is the best of the week, so I just had to post this outfit today instead of continuing to catch up on last week's photos. Plus, I was finally able to take outdoor photos again!!! Posting is so easy when you don't have to spend time touching up grainy, low-light, indoor pics :)

Just an easy but fun and bright outfit for a typical day at the office. I probably got too eager with both bare legs and short sleeves since The Day Job decided that it was warm enough to turn on the AC.... brrrrrrrrr!!!! If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I wore my jacket for most of the afternoon. At least I know I'll be comfy tomorrow for casual Friday!

Ensemble message: Ok you guys. This whole new role thing at The Day Job has been a super exciting ride, but let me tell you.... it has been way, way more demanding so far than my old role! That said... here is an outfit from Tuesday of last week. It is my second bright pink thrift find! As soon as I saw it, I knew it would be a versatile piece and that it would look great with my green wool shorts :) AND, it was half price so I got this baby for $3!!! I swear, this last thrifting trip made me a believer, especially now that The Hubby and I are looking for a new place to live (read: tight budgets).

Ensemble message: The past 2 days has been a whirlwind of recruiting activities at the Day Job! As crazy and exhausting as it is, I really do love interviewing college aged students. What's better is seeing them come in as interns, get a full-time offer at the end of the summer, and then watching them grow in their careers. The success stories are seriously one of the most rewarding parts of being in HR :) So yesterday I wore this outfit, knowing that I'd be going out to dinner with the candidates right after work. I wanted to dress up a little bit and obviously can't get enough of my thrifted shirt! I wasn't sure if I was going to like the ruffle on the dress competing with the collar, but everyone played nicely and the outfit ended up looking really nice. This is one I'd definitely wear again.

By the way, did you notice?? Bare legs!!!!! Now if only Mother Nature will properly coordinate the temperature with the precipitation... this week we're getting warm days full of rain, versus cold wintery days last week with sunshine.

Ensemble message: This week has been super, ridiculous, can't keep my head straight crazy! I'm barely making it through you guys, but I'm doing it. And I'm getting stuff done, exciting stuff too! New projects at The Day Job, potential projects for the blog, and house hunting to top it all off :) Needless to say, there are going to be mornings where I just want comfort in my outfit and with only 5 minutes to pull it all together. Thursday was exactly this kind of day, and without any pre-planning, this is what I ended up wearing to work.

I was fine with the ensemble, but then a girl who works near my area stopped me in the bathroom to compliment my t-shirt. After I thanked her, she went on to say how much she liked my entire outfit and that I always look cute. Wow!!! Totally unexpected compliment that kept my spirits up for the rest of the day. So lesson learned? Sometimes a t-shirt and pants are perfect :)

Office Lunchbox: Miso Soup

Another quick, easy, & CHEAP office lunch recipe! Barely any measuring, and the soup can be assembled in advance for the entire week. Since spring in the northeast has been slow to really bloom, I'm still craving warm and comforting lunches. Last week I made miso soup to bring in, but instead of seaweed, I used kale (yes, still on that kale kick! ;) All you need is as much kale and soft tofu as you desire and also miso paste.

First I steamed the kale and drained/cubed the tofu, and then put a portion in a large tupperware container. I didn't really measure, but I used about a quarter of a bunch of kale and a quarter of 1 package of tofu. Again, these ingredients are really as much or little as you wish. Do not add water yet - it's easier to transport into the office with just the kale and tofu. Plus, if the kale sits in the water, it's flavor will really overwhelm the entire soup (learned that the hard way!) Then, you can add water right before heating it up! I put in approximately 3 cups of water, which made a large and filling soup. In a smaller container, I added one tablespoon of miso paste per cup of water, and then added the miso after the soup was hot. And that's it!

Ensemble message: When I went on my big thrifting trip two weekends ago, I happened to find 2 items that were bright pink. This is not a color I normally wear, but something (maybe the slowly warming weather?) made me want to pair these items with every neutral in my closet.

The first is THIS dress - all caps because Target just re-released their most popular Go International pieces, including this Tucker beauty that several other bloggers also love. Knowing that I've seen this dress on the style blogs before, I wanted to wear it a little differently. I had a ton of meetings today plus a birthday dinner for my mother-in-law tonight, so I added a blazer for some polish. Sorry - seems like I'm doing that a lot lately! How else would you style this dress??

Oh! And this is my new haircut!! Super short but so much fun :)

Ensemble message: Happy Monday! How was everyone's day? I spent today recruiting interns, which included a commute to/from New York City. Needless to say, I did not have time to take outfit photos this morning. Luckily, since I did not have time to blog since Thursday night, I bring you last week's casual Friday outfit! I do apologize that it's a little slumpy and definitely wrinkly... but it was a long week and I was happy to be able to put together a photo-worthy outfit at all ;)

In other news, I chopped my hair! Like, really chopped it... I can't put it in a ponytail anymore, haha! Can't wait to show you guys this week. Ok well it's been a long day... see you guys tomorrow! :)

Like Morgan & Lua

This post is my best impression of a Morgan and Lua post... but it's Nicole and Donna. If you are a new reader, to be clear, Nicole is the human and Donna is the dog. I know, I know, it's the weirdest name for a dog. Except when you find out that our last name is Martin, and then your thoughts go immediately to Donna Martin of 90210 fame and the time she graduated.

Sooo I'm one who usually sticks to the usual format, but hey, I'm trying to win a cool necklace here! If you didn't already know, Morgan is giving away 2 amazing necklaces as part of her blogiversary celebration. The rules are that you have to create a Morgan and Lua-esque post, so of course I had to use little Donna as the ultimate prop ;)

Let me tell you... this photo shoot was no easy feat! Donna would not stop moving, even as I attempted to hold her!!! I think I made a rookie mistake of revealing the early morning treats right away... if I started with her sitting in my lap, she wouldn't have been sniffing every pocket for more. Either way, I'm now convinced that Lua is the calmest dog out there! For anyone who photographs dogs (if my readership covers this topic haha!) - any hints??

Ensemble message: This outfit was purposefully planned for yesterday because I went straight from work into New York City to see a band, Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside. They were really, really great - such an awesome vintage sound, especially with Sallie's unique voice. Go check them out - their first album is dropping on May 24th and they are taking their cd release parties back to the west coast (they're from Portland). Sorry east coast and midwest readers... looks like we'll have to wait a bit until they make it back across the country!

So keeping with the retro vibe of the evening, I wore this dress that I just thrifted last weekend. Based on last week's post on Sammy Davis Vintage, the "All That Jazz" label appears to be vintage. I really love the collar... I wish I took a picture of the dress without the cardi because the cut reminds me of a waitress from a diner ;) I actually made a killing in Goodwill... you'll definitely see more of my finds this week!
